Medical Disclaimer

The information on bmicalculatornhs.net ("this website") is provided for general information and education only. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and it does not create a doctor–patient relationship.
Information only, not medical advice
Our BMI calculators, charts, and guides are built around publicly available NHS and NICE guidance, but they cannot account for your full medical history, medications, or individual circumstances. Always seek the advice of your GP, pharmacist, or another qualified health professional with any questions about a medical condition or before starting, stopping, or changing any diet, exercise programme, or treatment.
What our tools can and cannot do
- Can: estimate Body Mass Index from the height and weight you enter, show where that value sits within standard adult categories, and explain related concepts such as healthy weight ranges and waist-to-height ratio.
- Cannot: diagnose underweight, overweight, obesity, or any health condition; distinguish between fat, muscle, and bone mass; or assess children, pregnancy, or complex medical situations the way a clinician would.
BMI has known limitations
BMI is a screening tool, not a complete health assessment. It may be less informative for athletes with high muscle mass, older adults with reduced muscle mass, pregnant people, and some ethnic groups — which is why NICE recommends lower BMI thresholds for people of Black African, African-Caribbean, South Asian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern backgrounds. Treat your result as a starting point for a conversation, not a verdict.
When to seek professional help
Speak to your GP or pharmacist if you are concerned about your weight, have an existing health condition (such as diabetes, heart disease, or an eating disorder), or experience worrying symptoms. For urgent health advice in England, contact NHS 111; in an emergency, call 999.
